Getting married for the second time – ideas and inspiration

As @ConfettiWedding says, ‘Whether widowed or divorced, falling in love all over again and making a lasting commitment will hopefully seal your happiness for the future. It’s also your chance to do everything you wanted to do before, but with the right person this time!’ If you’re like most people, you’ll probably want to make your second wedding completely different from your first. If you had a small registry office ceremony the first time, you may well want a big celebration, complete with all your friends and family, this time around. To help ensure you get everything just right, we’re taking a look at some great ideas for people tying the knot for the second time.

Blended families

A lot of the time, people getting remarried have kids from previous relationships to consider. Whether your children are still young or whether they’ve grown up and flown the nest, it’s important to find roles for them all in your big day. Including children in the planning and in the day itself will help them to feel part of the celebration and help you to start your new married life as you mean to go on. You could ask one of your children to be your best man or maid of honour, one of them could walk you up the aisle or you could ask them to perform readings during the ceremony.

Do it your way

All too often, couples getting married for the first time feel constrained by tradition. A lot of brides and grooms-to-be end up including elements in their wedding purely because they’re traditional. When you’re getting hitched for the second time, however, these customs often seem much less important. Now you’re older, wiser and more confident, you’ll most likely feel more able to pick and choose the traditions that suit you. In some cases, you may want to forgo all the bells and whistles of your first wedding and do something completely different instead.

Gifts

If you’re getting married later in life, the chances are you already have all the blenders, coffee machines and bread makers you could need. So instead of having a wedding list and asking friends and family to give gifts, why not create a wedding fund and ask for financial donations instead? You can then use this cash to help pay for your honeymoon and get your married life off to a great start.

Getting remarried gives you the opportunity to experience one of the most important events of your life all over again – this time with the right person by your side.
