How to make that Christmas or New Year engagement extra special

The festive period isn’t just a great time to tie the knot – just ask Sarah and James who hosted their wonderfully festive wedding right here at Gosfield Hall – it’s one of the most popular times to propose too!

Many couples choose to turn their status from ‘in a relationship’ to ‘just engaged’ at Christmas or the New Year. In fact, New Year’s Day, Christmas Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are the most popular days to propose according to WeddingWire.

Organising a Christmas or New Year engagement that’s as special as the season is a challenge many grooms-to-be choose to relish. To help you plan the perfect proposal at the most wonderful time of year, we’re here to share our proposal ideas for the months ahead.

Head into the cold

The weather may be a little chilly, but there’s nothing more heart-warming than a proposal in the snow – if you get the weather for it! Professional proposal planners The Heart Bandits reveal their top tips for proposing in the snow:

“Being that snow is ridiculously cold, what better excuse than to snuggle up with each other and enjoy a romantic picnic? Stumble upon this setup while out snowboarding and she will be in complete shock… Something about lights in snow is so romantic. Create a path of lights leading up to your proposal location and it will be super romantic.”

By using snowy surroundings as your proposal setting, you can turn something as simple as an impromptu winter walk into the most romantic memory.

Say in with photos

Take a trip down memory lane by creating a photo album that documents your relationship so far. You can include photographs, mementoes from previous dates, event tickets, trinkets and love notes in your ‘Year in Review’ album. Finish your story by writing ‘Will you marry me?’ on the very last page and get that ring ready for its closeup!

Countdown to engagement

The countdown is an iconic part of any New Year’s Eve celebration, so use it to your advantage during your proposal. You’ll make a moment already known for its anticipation and excitement extra special as well as start the New Year with a bang.

Mark the days of Advent

Personalised advent calendars come in all shapes, sizes and styles, and they’re excellent props for your Christmas proposal. Reserve the window for Christmas Eve or Christmas Day for the engagement ring, and fill the remainder with love notes detailing the many reasons why you adore your partner.

If you really want to surprise your fiancée-to-be, fill the rest of your Advent calendar with chocolates, she’ll never know that ring and that big question are coming!

Serve breakfast in bed

Celebrate the start of the New Year or the arrival of Christmas Day by greeting your partner with breakfast in bed and a very big surprise. If your partner loves a good brew first thing in the morning, a personalised cup with a hidden message at the bottom offers a quirky way to pop the question.
